Manitoba Public Insurance receives many inquiries from medical professionals regarding the assessment of patients/clients specifically in fitness to drive. This 2-hour learning module discusses practitioner responsibilities, communication strategies and rules related to operating vehicles with a variety of medical presentations. This learning module will be of interest to family physicians, specialist physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and psychologists.

Current Manitoba legislation, practitioner responsibilities, resources for driver assessment and best practices are addressed. Topics such as dementia, cardiac disease, seizures, recreational drugs, and mental health are included, and common cases are presented with links to references for further self directed learning.

 

Learning Objectives

After completing this CPD event, you will be able to:

  • Explain the Health Care Professional’s role in assessing a patient’s fitness to drive. (Professional, Medical Expert)
  • Recognize the national medical standards for some common medical conditions. (Scholar, Medical Expert)
  • Identify the process of patient assessment against standards. (Professional, Medical Expert, Communicator)
  • Recall driver fitness reporting requirements. (Professional, Collaborator, Communicator)

This one-credit-per-hour Self Learning program meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been approved by the CPD Medicine Program, University of Manitoba for up to 2.0 Mainpro+ credits.

This activity is an Accredited Self-Assessment Activity (Section 3) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of The Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, and approved by the CPD Medicine Program, University of Manitoba on May 5, 2023 and expires May 5, 2026.
