February 24, 2024          9:00 AM – 12:00 PM (Livestream Online Only)

Description

This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), its importance, anatomy, and structure, as well as the embryology and development of the joint. It delves into the clinical relevance of TMJ, highlighting temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) and the role of the lateral pterygoid muscle in TMJ function. The hypothesis of two distinct muscles in the lateral pterygoid is explored, as well as recent findings on superior head insertions and their impact on TMJ internal derangement susceptibility.

TMJ embryology is crucial for understanding the joint’s structure, function, and potential disorders. The presentation covers developmental changes in the TMJ and compares it to other synovial joints. It also discusses the diagnostic criteria and evaluation of TMD, including biomechanical, traumatic, inflammatory, degenerative, psychological, genetic, and hormonal factors.

The presentation also explores masticatory muscle disorders, such as protective co-contraction, local muscle soreness, and centrally mediated myalgia. It specifically addresses myofascial pain, its history, clinical characteristics, and treatment options like physical therapy, medications, trigger point injections, acupuncture, behavioral therapy, oral appliances, and neuromodulator injections. The efficacy of neuromodulator injections in treating myofascial pain and centrally mediated pain is examined.
