Description
This course will cover the administration of both block and infiltration of local anesthesia. Emphasis is placed on the mechanisms of pain and a thorough understanding of the pharmacology of drugs used in dentistry and their interactions with the patient’s current medical conditions and medications. The participants are required to do a home self-study component prior to the three-day course. A pre-clinical written examination will be administered which requires a passing grade of 75 per cent before proceeding to the clinical component. Participants will receive over the shoulder coaching as they administer local anesthesia on a live patient. Upon successful completion of the Written Examination and Oral and Clinical Competency Examination at the end of the program, participants will be issued a Certificate of Completion.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this event participants should be able to:
- Discuss the mechanism of pain including its generation, perception, sources and classifications
- Discuss both traditional and non-traditional methods of pain control
- Identify the anatomy of the head and neck as it pertains to the administration of anesthetic agents
- Discuss the significance of the medical history as it relates to the administration of anesthetic agents
- Describe the pharmacology of dental anesthetics and vasoconstrictors including adverse reaction, side effects and contraindications
- Administer local anesthesia safely utilizing acceptable infiltration and block anesthetic techniques
- Identify the landmarks, site depth of penetration and anatomy anesthetized for all injections
- Identify and know how to manage complicated and adverse reactions of local anesthetic administration
Instructor(s)
Dr. Nancy Auyeung BSc(Dent), DMD
Dr. Nancy Auyeung is a 1992 dental graduate of then Faculty of Dentistry and now the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry at the University of Manitoba and has maintained a private dental practice in Winnipeg for over 30 years. Dr. Auyeung is a Past President of the Manitoba Dental Association (MDA) and has served on various MDA Committees during her professional career.
In addition to private practice, Dr. Auyeung is a part time clinical instructor at the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry and also serves as the appointed Director of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for Dentistry/Dental Hygiene at the University of Manitoba, a leadership role in developing continuing education for dental professionals. Her passion and commitment to serve dentistry continues in her work with various dental organizations, including the National Dental Examining Board of Canada, the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada, the Canadian Dental Regulatory Authorities Federation, the Canadian Dental Association, the Manitoba Dental Foundation, the University of Manitoba Dental Alumni Association.
In recognition of her extensive involvement in the profession of dentistry, Dr. Auyeung has been honored with Fellowship in the International College of Dentists in which she currently serves as the Deputy Regent for the Manitoba Section, the American College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy in which she currently serves as the Chair for the PFA Western Provinces.
Prerequisites
Participants must be graduates of an accredited dental program recognized by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada and hold a current valid license in their province or state of residence. All registrants must have a current MDA license, CPR certification, Health Care Provider (HCP CPR Level C), and malpractice insurance.
During the clinical component of this course, participants will be required to bring in suitable Sim-Patients to act as patients for the hands-on session and competency assessments. Registrants must submit a completed medical history form for all Sim-Patients, in addition to consent and waiver forms for all Sim-Patients.

Course registrants are expected to complete assigned readings before participating in the clinical
component of the course.

Required Armamentarium
The following items are required and will NOT be supplied:
- Lab coat and clinical attire, including dedicated clinical shoes (cleanable, no mesh)
- Mouth mirror, forceps
- Protective eye wear and visor/face shield
- self aspirating syringe (2-4)

Dentist: $4850.00 (does not include the price of the textbook and study manual)
Refund Policy
As Per CPD Dentistry policy, the department requires any refund or cancellation request to be submitted in writing up to thirty (30) days prior to the program or session start date. Refund or cancellation requests made with less than thirty (30) days notice prior to the event will be at the discretion of the Director of Continuing Professional Development for Dentistry & Dental Hygiene and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Registrants may receive a refund minus an administrative fee, provided they give written notice no later than thirty (30) days prior to the event. The administrative fee is retained to cover costs for pre-arranged supplies and administrative costs to process refunds and other costs associated with cancellations.
The University of Manitoba reserves the right to cancel or postpone any educational program due to an insufficient number of registrations. The decision to cancel will normally be made at least fourteen (14) days prior to the program date. Each registrant will be notified by email and provided with a full refund of all registration costs. The University of Manitoba is not liable for any loss, damages or other expenses that such cancellations may cause, including, but not limited to, non-refundable airline fares, hotel penalties or lost income.

This course provides up to 16 hours of Continuing Dental Education (CDE) Credits.
