Beginners NVivo 12 – February 12, 2019 (SOLD OUT)

Researchers and analysts commonly use qualitative data analysis software (QDAS) tools in academia, healthcare, government, and marketing. QDAS tools organize, analyze and visualize unstructured data. In many cases, these data are text-based, however, most QDAS tools can integrate and interrogate other data types such as images, audio, video, surveys, and PDFs. In some cases, QDAS tools incorporate templates for streamlining accepted, established data analysis techniques for users (e.g., content analysis, framework analysis, social network analysis, etc.) The industry leading QDAS software is NVivo 12, and while other QDAS tools exist (e.g., Dedoose, MaxQDAS, Atlas.ti, etc.), many qualitative researchers accept that NVivo offers the widest variety of organizational and analytic functions. Dr. Allan McDougall, a full-time qualitative researcher with the Canadian Medical Protective Association, is a NVivo Certified Expert with nearly 10 years’ experience using the tool and training users. This session will provide an overview for how NVivo 12 can be used to facilitate mixed methods research. A practical workshop on leveraging some of NVivo’s most useful features will also be provided. PC and Mac versions of NVivo will be appropriate for this session (older versions of NVivo too!).

At the end of this session, participants will:

• Understand how NVivo can be used to draw insights from mixed methods datasets (e.g., surveys)
• Import, code, and analyze mixed methods data with NVivo
• Appreciate some of NVivo’s basic and more advanced functionality

This is an interactive workshop. To get as much as possible out of the workshop, participants are asked to bring laptops with them. Allan McDougall

Dr. Allan McDougall is a qualitative researcher in the department of Medical Care Analytics at the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA), a non-profit organization that protects the professional integrity of physicians and promotes safe medical care. He holds a PhD in Health Professional Education from Western University. Dr. McDougall is developing a research program on the medico-legal experiences of post-graduate trainees. As an Adjunct Professor in the University of Ottawa’s Department of Education, Dr. McDougall also continues to collaborate and publish in medical education with an interest in the role of spatial and software design in clinical learning and patient safety. Dr. McDougall has expertise in mixed methods research methodologies including content analysis, ethnography, sociomateriality, and grounded theory.
