Equity, Diversity & Inclusion: Stop, Talk, Roll – Disrupting Microaggressions on the Ward – May 26, 2021

Microaggressions occur often in different contexts and are usually marked by unfriendly, hostile behaviors towards victims. Defined as “…brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral and environmental indignities” they may be intentional or unintentional. Microaggressions harm the victim and when left unaddressed, create a non-welcoming environment for students, staff, and faculty. This workshop focuses strategies for responding to microaggression in a clinical setting.

After completing this workshop, you should be able to:

• define a microaggression and identify when microaggressions occur in the health care setting,
• discuss the importance of power dynamics and intent vs. impact as key factors in the overview of microaggressions,
• employ strategies to interrupt microaggressions when they occur using a variety of communication techniques, and
• reflect on the importance of empathy and awareness in understanding the impact of microaggressions.
