Description
In 2023, the Canadian Dental Regulatory Authorities Federation approved recognition of dental anesthesia as a specialty of dentistry in Canada. This course will provide a brief overview of the process involved in its establishment as a specialty and will demonstrate how it meets the published criteria for this status. It will report on the results of studies demonstrating the need and demand for sedation and general anesthesia and describe the extent to which many Canadians are interested in these services for their own dentistry. This course will review how recognition of dental anesthesia as a specialty provides benefits for the public and the profession, and answer the questions:
- What is the scope of practice of a dentist anesthesiologist?
- What are the steps required to become this specialist?
- Where does a dentist obtain specialty training?
Learning Objectives

- Articulate the need and demand for dental anesthesia services.
- Explain the benefits for the public and the profession of having this as a specialty.
- Describe the scope of practice of a dentist anesthesiologist.
- Describe the steps in becoming this specialist.
