The College of Pharmacists of Manitoba (CPhM) Pharmacy Jurisprudence Modules provide a strong foundation in provincial and federal pharmacy jurisprudence.

These self-study modules must be completed by all new CPhM applicants, including pharmacists (domestically and internationally educated), interns, and pharmacy technicians-in-training before they can write the CPhM Jurisprudence Examination (JP exam).

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of these modules, learners should be able to:

  • Describe the federal and provincial legislation that govern the practice of pharmacy in Manitoba.
  • Articulate the importance of regulation, and the purpose of the College of Pharmacists of Manitoba.
  • Reflect on ethical principles that guide pharmacy practice, and apply the Code of Ethics.
  • Define the practice of pharmacy in Manitoba, describe the scope of practice of pharmacy professionals (including expanded scopes) and other pharmacy personnel, and compare it to the scope of other regulated health professionals.
  • Examine the responsibility and accountability expected of pharmacy professionals for the protection of narcotic and controlled substances in pharmacy practice.
  • Describe the legislated complaints and discipline processes when complaints arise against pharmacy professionals and pharmacy owners in Manitoba.
  • Describe Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) as it relates to patient safety, and articulate the expectations and responsibilities of pharmacy professionals to protect and enhance patient safety.
  • Interpret and apply pharmacy legislation and practice standards to common challenges faced in pharmacy practice in Manitoba.

*Please note: Case Scenario 8 in Module 11 is no longer accurate. Recent amendments were made to the Podiatrists Regulation which now allows for podiatrists, with prescribing authority, to prescribe medications set out in their regulation. Therefore, Manitoba pharmacists can fill prescriptions for podiatrists who have prescribing authority in Manitoba or another Canadian province or territory.

These modules are intended to expose you to foundational themes in pharmacy practice and are not a comprehensive education on pharmacy law in Manitoba.

Although the learning included in these modules will be reflected in the CPhM JP Exam, it is critical that you put meaningful effort into completing the modules, in addition to being knowledgeable of and understand the application of all legislation, practice directions and standards, guidelines, and joint statements relevant to the practice of pharmacy in Manitoba. You are encouraged to review the resources cited throughout the modules to ensure you are familiar with the documents and review the JP Exam Study Material. You are not expected to memorize the references, but to review and reflect on their content.
