Dean’s Grand Rounds in Health and Humanities – Music as Medicine with Adriana Barton – November 28, 2022 (Webinar)
*Sponsored by the Alan Klass Program in Health and Humanities
Why does music matter in healthcare? Amid growing talk of “the healing power of music,” which claims are evidence based—and which are pseudoscience? Health journalist Adriana Barton, author of the 2022 book WIRED FOR MUSIC, discusses the therapeutic benefits of music, current applications in healthcare settings, and surprising musical interventions in medical history.
Adriana Barton is a Vancouver-based journalist, author and former staff health reporter at The Globe and Mail. Her writing on health, science, visual arts, architecture, music and pop culture has appeared in publications including Utne, Azure, Western Living and San Francisco Bay Guardian. She studied the cello for 17 years with teachers including international solo artist Antonio Lysy and former Cleveland Orchestra principal cellist Stephen Geber. Research assignments have taken her to countries including Syria, Jordan, India, Cuba, Zimbabwe and Brazil.
