Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: Creating Safe Spaces – January 19, 2023 (Zoom)
Providing a safe space for students to grow, learn, and share is critical in education. In this workshop we will explore the concept of a ‘safe space’ and discuss ways faculty can promote both safe and brave spaces through deliberate curriculum design.
Learning objectives:
- Define the term ‘safe space/brave space’ in reference to a learning environment,
- Explain how the lived world experiences of Black, Indigenous and Racialized Peoples, Persons with Disabilities, Women and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community require teachers to actively create safe learning spaces.
- Apply skills to create a safe and healthy learning environment that is inclusive for all students
Facilitators:
Dr. Joanne Hamilton, Office of Innovation and Scholarship in Medical Education, Maxy Rady College of Medicine
Miss Valerie Williams, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences
Zoom link and any handouts will be sent to attendees prior to the workshop.
