Effective Feedback: Writing Narrative Comments – March 27, 2025 (Zoom)
Feedback is very welcome! Does it make sense. Are the sentences easy to read and do they flow well. Do you get a sense of what the workshop is about?
Including narrative comments when completing formative assessment (feedback) or summative assessments (grades) provide rich information to guide student’s professional growth and developing professional identity. Numeric ratings and letter grades may signal to a learner the need for improvement, but provide little information on the how and why. In this workshop we will explore strategies for generating narrative comments aimed at fostering a growth mindset in learners. While principles in the workshop may be applied to any learning situation, we will principly focus on the clinical learning environment.
Learning Objectives:
After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe the function of written narrative comments
- Identify the components of useful narrative comments
- Provide written feedback to learners that fosters learning
