Self-awareness is one aspect of empathic communication. The 2nd facet is the “giving and taking of” feedback.  Students say that they need instructors to be better role models of empathy. Role modelling occurs when instructors provide feedback plus receive feedback from their students. When doing so, instructors show students how to provide and receive feedback from their clients. This presentation will highlight the salience of feedback to empathic communication.

Learning Objectives
After completing this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the merit of feedback in empathic communication (e.g., counterattack against egocentrism)
  • Identify the linkage between perspective-taking and feedback
