Functional Crown Lengthening

Description

Subgingival caries and subgingival tooth fractures are often challenging for the general dentist. Surgical crown lengthening is a common procedure that can improve the restorative results of these challenging cases. Participants will learn the rationale for crown lengthening, the indications and proper treatment planning for surgical crown lengthening, and they will receive hands-on experience in practicing crown lengthening. This course is comprised of 3 hours of didactic lecture and 3 hours of hands-on experience on pig jaw specimens and anatomically correct plaster models, which will allow the participants to practice basic and advanced surgical skills required for functional crown lengthening procedures.

Learning Objectives

• By the end of the event, participants will:
  • Be able to explain the rationale for crown lengthening.
  • Be able to identify the indications and contra-indications of crown lengthening.
  • Be able to treatment plan cases that require surgical crown lengthening.
  • Be able to design proper incisions for functional crown lengthening.
  • Be able to perform internal bevel marginal and submarginal incisions on pig jaw specimens.
  • Be able to perform full and split-thickness flaps on pig jaw specimens.
  • Be able to suture gingiva on pig jaw specimens.
  • Be able to perform osseous re-sective surgery on anatomically correct plaster models.

Dr. Chrysi Stavropoulou  DDS, MDent(Perio), FRCD(C)

Dr Chrysi Stavropoulou, current Graduate Periodontics Program Director and Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba, graduated from the National and Capodistrial University of Athens in Greece as a scholar of the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation with the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery, in 2013. Her passion for Periodontology led her in Winnipeg, where she obtained her Master of Dentistry in Periodontics from the University of Manitoba, in 2018. During her residency, Dr Stavropoulou was awarded with the Dr John (Jack) Neilson Research Award and received funds in support of her clinical research. Dr Stavropoulou entered the Academia, as Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba, in 2019. Her research interests include oral-systemic relationships and peri-implantitis. She currently holds a grant from Manitoba Medical Service Foundation for her research on peri-implant diseases. Dr Stavropoulou practices as a periodontist one day a week. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentist of Canada, a member of the Canadian Academy of Periodontology, an international member of the American Academy of Periodontology and the American Dental Education Association.

In her leisure time, Dr Stavropoulou enjoys dancing and cycling. She also likes traveling and exploring different cultures.

Dr. Carlo Sgarbanti  DDS, MDent (Perio)

Diplomate of The American Board of Periodontology

Winnipeg Periodontist Dr. Carlo Sgarbanti graduated with honors from the University of Ferrara in Italy with the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery, in 2011. He then completed a Masters in Implantology at the University of Turin (Italy) in 2014. His interest in Periodontology brought him first to Columbus (USA) in 2015 where he attended an Observership program in Periodontology at Ohio State University and afterwards to Winnipeg where he completed a Masters in Periodontics at the University of Manitoba.

Dr. Sgarbanti is Canadian Board certified and Diplomate from the American Board of Periodontology.

Dr. Sgarbanti is currently Assistant Professor in Periodontics in the Department of Dental Diagnostic and Surgical Sciences at the University of Manitoba.

In his free time Dr. Sgarbanti enjoys exploring the beauty of Canada and spending time with his wife Romana and his daughter Rosa.

Refund Policy

As Per CPD Dentistry & Dental Hygiene policy, registrants may receive a refund provided they give written notice no later than fourteen (14) days prior to the event. An administration fee will be retained to cover staff costs of processing refunds and other costs associated with cancellations.
