Health Professions Education Scholarship Day – August 25, 2022 (webinar)
Education and the learner experience is a strategic priority for the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences (RFHS). Health Professions Education Scholarship Day highlights the educational research and innovation being conducted by faculty and learners throughout RFHS and provides a space for educational scholars to network and share their research and innovations with other members of the RFHS community. A session featuring oral and poster presentations is scheduled for 10:30-11:30am via Zoom.
“It Gets Better and the Rewards Are Worth It”: Learning From the Experiences of Medical Educators on Anti-Racist/Anti-Colonial Teaching
This presentation will highlight findings from my doctoral research that examined the experiences of medical educators who teach Indigenous health using an anti-racist decolonizing approach. Their stories documented their journey through the challenges and rewards of engaging in critical pedagogy and hold lessons that for other educators across health disciplines.
Presenter: Linda Diffey
Time: 9:30 AM – 10:15 AM
Poster and Abstract Presentations
Time: 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Keynote: Transformative Education: The Value of Critical Reflection and Reflexivity in Health Professions Education/Research
Health care is a social activity that is shaped by beliefs, values, and habits of clinicians. Many topics important to high quality health care require deep exploration of one’s own values, beliefs, and practices, such as addressing ‘isms’ and strengthening equity. Fostering this deeper exploration involves pedagogical approaches well-suited to the objective. This talk will introduce two types of reflection – reflexivity and critical reflection – before working through two strategies to foster them, exemplified through two studies.
Presenter: Dr. Patty Thille
Time: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
Workshop: Supporting Critical Reflection in Health Professions Education: The Example of Weight Stigma in Health Care
Attendees will first participate in a workshop that embeds an arts-based method and other strategies to support critical reflection, on the topic of weight stigma in health care. They will then have the opportunity to deconstruct that experience, specifically the teaching and learning activities involved. Finally, they will explore topics within their educational research projects or teaching where critical reflection could enhance learning/outcomes.
Presenters: Liz Harvey, Dr. Zoe Leyland, and Dr. Patty Thille
Time: 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Call for abstracts open until August 18, 2022, submission details can be found here.
