Late Career Transitions:  Navigation for Smoother Sailing

Description:

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to

1)     reflect on their career and consider the options available to navigate change as they enter the last 1/3 of their career,

2)     describe recent literature on mid and late-stage career and retirement issues for physicians, and

3)      be inspired to advocate for system changes in their various practice contexts including having regular opportunities to have these types of planning conversations      throughout one’s career.

Facilitator:  Ivan Silver

Dr. Ivan Silver has enjoyed a career in medical education focusing on both continuing professional development and faculty development. He was the inaugural director of the Centre for Faculty Development in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto from 2002-2009 and later the Vice-Dean of CPD at the University of Toronto (2005-2011). More recently he was the inaugural Vice-President of Education at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, from 2012-2018. Dr. Silver is an award winning medical educator and a full Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. He also continues an active clinical practice in geriatric psychiatry at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. He is continuing his education research and scholarship in the areas of feedback, professionalism, the imposter syndrome and continuing professional and faculty development.
