Management of Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office
November 25, 2023 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM (CST)
Description
Medical emergencies do occur in dental offices. The primary objective of this course is to prepare the entire dental team, including general dentists, specialists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants, to take part in their management. This course will begin with a discussion of how to utilize the medical history to implement steps to minimize the likelihood of a medical emergency, by reviewing relevant drug interactions and the management of medically compromised patients. This will be followed by a discussion of basic principles that apply to all medical emergencies in dentistry. Suggestions for equipment and the pharmacology of emergency drugs will be reviewed. The signs and symptoms of specific emergencies, including syncope, severe allergic reactions, cardiovascular emergencies, respiratory emergencies, endocrine emergencies, and local anesthetic toxicity, and step-by-step protocols for their management, will then be presented. It is assumed that all attendees are already knowledgeable in basic life support (CPR), and this course builds upon that knowledge. The program will conclude with practical points regarding how to create and organize an emergency kit, the role of individual staff members as part of a team approach to management, and communication among staff members as well as to external help during an emergency.
Learning Objectives
- At the end of the course, the participant will be able to:
• Utilize the medical history to implement steps to minimize the likelihood of a medical emergency.
• Create and organize a medical emergency kit.
• Interpret signs and symptoms to determine a differential diagnosis of a medical emergency.
• Manage a medical emergency in a dental office.
