Presenters
Dr. Robert L. Hendren (keynote speaker), D.O., is Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science; Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry; Co-Director of the UCSF Dyslexia Center; and Director, Program for Research On Neurodevelopmental and Translational Outcomes (PRONTO). Dr. Hendren is Past President of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (2007-2009). He has published well over 100 scientific papers and 5 books and has been listed in “The Best Doctors in America”, each year since it was first published in 1996.
Dr. Hendren took his residency in general psychiatry at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, and his child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at the Yale Child Study Center.
His current areas of research and publication interests are translational interventional outcomes research including clinical pharmacology, nutraceutical and nutritional trials using biomarkers (metabolomics, measures of inflammation, oxidative stress, immune function, pharmacogenomics and neuroimaging) to enhance resilience in neurodevelopmental disorders. He is currently applying a targeted outcomes research approach in collaborative projects with the Oak Hill School for youth with severe autism and neurodevelopmental spectrum, and the Charles Armstrong School, Athena Academy and Chartwell School for youth with dyslexia.
Dr. Dawn McCartney, MD, FRCPC, is a child and adolescent psychiatrist with Neurodevelopmental Service at Manitoba Adolescent Treatment Centre. Her expertise is in providing psychiatric care for children with complex neurodevelopmental needs, supporting their families and caregivers and working as part of a multidisciplinary team. She teaches medical students and residents about caring for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Intellectual Disabilities
Dr. Leslie Jocelyn, MD, FRCPC, is uniquely trained as both a Developmental Pediatrician and Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. She has spent her entire career working with children and youth with neurodevelopmental and behavior disorders. Dr. Jocelyn was previously a Developmental Pediatrician at the Child Development Clinic at Children’s Hospital, and she later obtained her FRCPC in Child Psychiatry. Dr. Jocelyn relocated to Ottawa, where she was a consulting Psychiatrist at Emerging Minds Clinic. Upon her return to Winnipeg, she resumed her academic appointment as an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Manitoba. She has a strong commitment to the clinical training of pediatric, psychiatry and family practice trainees as well as practicing physicians. Dr. Jocelyn is a consulting Psychiatrist at the Manitoba Adolescent Treatment Center’s ADHD Service, where she provides assessment and treatment for children and adolescents with ADHD and associated comorbid disorders.
About the MPA
The MPA’s objectives are to represent psychiatrists within Doctors Manitoba, as well as to provide a formal regional representation to the Canadian Psychiatric Association and its national components. The MPA plays a role in advocating (along with other groups) for the mental health and psychiatric care of Manitobans, promoting our psychiatric profession, addressing the wellbeing of our profession’s practitioners and learners, and fully participating and supporting the ongoing educational needs of its members.
