MEDICAL EMERGENCIES IN THE DENTAL OFFICE October 14 2017
Description:
This case-based, hands-on course will focus on medical emergencies in the dental clinic setting. Topics will include patient evaluation, crisis resource management skills, and the recognition and management of acute medical emergencies – including cardiac, respiratory, allergic, neurologic and endocrine. Instructors will use structured cases to highlight key learning points and practical tips for dealing with acute medical issues. The case-based learning will be complemented with hands-on skills practice in the dental clinic, designed to help participants to become more comfortable with critical skills such as airway management and basic life support. Airway manikins will be used to learn and refine basic and advanced airway management skills (including bag-mask ventilation, laryngoscopy, and the approach to the difficult airway). Participants will also work together in teams to manage the first 5-10 minutes of a simulated cardiac arrest scenario. This exercise will be followed by a debriefing session that emphasizes the take-home messages from the case, and also touches on communication and teamwork skills in a crisis situation.
