Description
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons typically engage in and represent the community standard in certain areas of facial trauma, facial deformity correction, reconstructive facial surgery, temporomandibular joint management and surgery, head and neck infections, and management of pathologies. However, the general dental practitioner should be competent in performing basic surgical procedures which commonly occur in these practice settings. Because of anesthetic concerns, past experiences with surgical complications, or lack of training, many general practitioners may hesitate to perform even basic oral surgery procedures.
This innovative, hands-on course will focus on helping general dentists develop or refine essential skills that are critical for successful performance of oral surgical procedures. The program includes mini-lectures on oral surgery topics that are relevant to the general practitioner, and a hands-on component using animal models to practice various surgical procedures that include suturing techniques, socket preservation techniques, reducing oral-antral communications, and simple soft tissue biopsy techniques. Faculty experts will demonstrate technique and guide participants in basic oral surgical procedures to improve their skills. Upon completion, course participants should be more knowledgeable and competent in applying these skills into everyday patient care with confidence.
Learning Objectives
- Design, perform and close a surgical flap using various suturing techniques
- Determine surgical difficulty and assess risk in extraction cases.
- Assess and manage post extraction oro-antral communication.
- Mitigate the risk associated with a missing tooth following extraction using socket preservation techniques
- Manage post extraction bleeding in patients on blood thinners.
- Achieve successful anesthesia in patients who are difficult to freeze.
- Perform simple soft tissue biopsy and avoid delays in diagnosis.
