Description

Orthodontic Module Refresher Course

This course is designed for the dental hygienist who is already certified to assist with orthodontic procedures, but would like a refresher to review their theoretical knowledge, in addition to a hands-on component to practice their skills, especially if they have not had the opportunity to employ this scope of practice for a prolonged period of time.

This course consists of didactic lectures, a hands-on lab, and clinic sessions of shadowing/assisting the graduate residents, lab instructors and dental assistants in the graduate orthodontic clinic. During the lab, participants will review current theoretical knowledge and demonstrate the application of orthodontic techniques in collaboration with a dentist or orthodontist. Subsequently, participants will receive over the shoulder coaching in the ortho clinic at the University of Manitoba as part of the clinical refresher training, assisting in the clinic over a period of 8 weeks.

Participants are required to do a self-study review of the protocols carried out in the operatory during clinic and the tools of the trade. The educational outcomes include up-to-date knowledge of orthodontic armamentarium as well as hands-on application within the dental hygiene scope of practice. The clinical component will focus on the development of orthodontic skills, from the proper management of instruments, to carrying out orthodontic procedures. A Written and Clinical Competency Knowledge Check will be employed to help the participants feel confident in their skills for this scope of practice.
