Course Description
Designed specifically for dental hygienists, participants will acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to place technically-sound and clinically acceptable dental restorations using a variety of restorative materials. In preparation for the course, participants must complete a six-week self-study period using the required purchased textbook and laboratory manual. Participants will receive prepared model teeth in a typodont, to practice restorative techniques using armamentarium and supplies (amalgam and composite) available in their usual practice settings. On the first day of the course, participants will submit their restored models for evaluation and feedback. The three-week course is comprised of online/live lectures, preclinical sessions in the student lab at the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry followed by two weeks of rotation at a community dental clinic where participants restore teeth prepared by a dentist during live patient care, alternating with lab time to refine technique. Participants of this course will be evaluated for both their knowledge and competency in placing clinically acceptable dental restorations. Successful completion of the Written Examination with a passing grade of 70 per cent, Preclinical Competency Assessment and Clinical Competency Assessment are required to receive a Certificate of Completion.
Participants are responsible to know the competency requirements for this scope of practice for dental hygiene practice in their respective jurisdiction. It is advisable that Participants contact their respective dental hygiene regulatory authority to ensure that this course is recognized prior to registration.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this event participants should be able to:
- Fabricate and safely place clinically and cosmetically acceptable permanent restorations (both direct and indirect), involving but not limited to:
- Selection of client-appropriate materials
- Matrix system placement
- Anatomy reformation
- Retraction cord placement
- Esthetic considerations
- Occlusal adjustment
- Polishing/finishing of restorations
- Fabricate and place clinically acceptable temporary restorations
- Assess the integrity and the appropriate procedures and techniques involved in the placement of implant-supported prosthetics
- Recognize and prevent errors and potential complications associated with dental restorations
- Determine the most appropriate pain management for individual restorative procedures
- Describe theories related to the protection of the pulp through the use of liners and bases, and placing liners and bases
- Incorporate necessary personal protective equipment for both the clinician and patient during restorative dental procedures
- Utilize four-handed techniques in performing restorative procedures
Instructor(s)
Dr. Nancy Auyeung BSc(Dent), DMD
Dr. Nancy Auyeung is a 1992 dental graduate of then Faculty of Dentistry and now the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry at the University of Manitoba and has maintained a private dental practice in Winnipeg for over 30 years. Dr. Auyeung is a Past President of the Manitoba Dental Association (MDA) and has served on various MDA Committees during her professional career.
In addition to private practice, Dr. Auyeung is a part time clinical instructor at the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry and also serves as the appointed Director of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for Dentistry/Dental Hygiene at the University of Manitoba, a leadership role in developing continuing education for dental professionals. Her passion and commitment to serve dentistry continues in her work with various dental organizations, including the National Dental Examining Board of Canada, the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada, the Canadian Dental Regulatory Authorities Federation, the Canadian Dental Association, the Manitoba Dental Foundation, the University of Manitoba Dental Alumni Association.
In recognition of her extensive involvement in the profession of dentistry, Dr. Auyeung has been honored with Fellowship in the International College of Dentists in which she currently serves as the Deputy Regent for the Manitoba Section, the American College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy in which she currently serves as the Chair for the PFA Western Provinces.
Connie Hack Dip.DH, RRDH
Connie graduated with honors from the University of Manitoba in 1996, with dual recognition as a Registered Dental hygienist as well as a Registered Restorative Dental hygienist.
Connie holds membership with the Canadian and Manitoba Dental Hygienists Associations, as well as the College of Dental Hygienists of Manitoba.
Connie has spent her entire career working alongside Prosthodontists as a restorative hygienist, and now also divides her time as a part-time instructor in the Departments of Restorative Dentistry, Department of Dental Hygiene, as well as provides teaching instruction with the CPD program at the University of Manitoba.
Prerequisites
In order to register for this course, you must be a graduate of an accredited dental hygiene program and hold a current, valid license with a provincial/state regulatory authority. You must also provide the following documentation:
- Graduation certificate from a Canadian-accredited dental hygiene program
- Current licensure in your province or state of residence
- Current malpractice insurance
- Valid CPR certification (Health Care Provider HCP CPR Level C)
- Written verification of full vaccination with COVID vaccines approved by Health Canada, upon request
- Completed and signed Participant Agreement – to be provided after completed registration.
Proof of all credentials must be provided before you are able to participate in the course.
Required Readings
Course registrants are expected to complete assigned readings over a recommended six-week self-study period before participating in the clinical component of the course.

Required Armamentarium
The following items are required and will NOT be supplied:
- Proper clinic attire, such as uniform or clinic jacket
- Suitable footwear – no open-toed shoes
- Safety glasses
- Facial visor
- Laptop or tablet with charging device – course handouts will be in electronic form
Registration
The course fee for this 3 week course is:
Dental Hygienist – TBC (not including textbooks)
Course fee covers the rental of typodonts, instruments, hand pieces, prepped typodont teeth and other laboratory consumables in a set kit provided to each Participant. There will be a fee for additional consumables requested. In order to secure a spot in the course, all fees must be paid in full at the time of registration. All travel and accommodation costs are the responsibility of the registrant.

Refund Policy
As per CPD Dentistry policy, the department requires any cancellation request to be submitted in writing no later than sixty (60) days prior to the first day of the event. Please note: Due to the extensive arrangements that must be made for the pre-clinical and clinical components of this course, refunds for any part or all of the registration fee will not be considered.
The University of Manitoba reserves the right to cancel or postpone any educational program due to an insufficient number of registrations. The decision to cancel will normally be made at least thirty (30) days prior to the program date. Each registrant will be notified by email and provided with a full refund of registration costs. The University of Manitoba is not liable for any loss, damages or other expenses that such cancellations may cause, including, but not limited to, non-refundable airline fares, hotel penalties or lost income.
