Self-Awareness: The Basis for Empathic Communication – February 9, 2022 (webinar)
Studies show that students struggle with practicing empathy when they do not feel empathy from instructors. We all know the instructor type . . . “Do as I say, not as I do”. According to Mercer and Reynolds (2002), empathy involves an ability to: (a) understand the student’s situation, perspective, and feelings (and their attached meanings); (b) communicate that understanding and check its accuracy; and (c) act on that understanding with the student in a helpful way. Empathy is a social practice but, it is also about being in touch with oneself. This presentation will highlight the value in self-awareness as part of being an empathic instructor.
Learning Objectives
After completing this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe the merit of self-awareness BEFORE adopting an empathic stance
