Foundations of Emergency Airway Management

 Wednesday, November 10 2021

8:00-16:00

Clinical Learning & Simulation Facility, Bannatyne Campus (727 McDermot Avenue)

$1200

Course Description: This course is for physicians who want to learn, practice, and improve the skills and knowledge required for safe and effective airway management in an emergency setting.  Designed by emergency physicians, for emergency physicians, this course blends simulation and hands-on practice to allow you to integrate skill acquisition with clinical decision making.  Skills include: bag-mask ventilation, laryngoscopy and intubation, airway adjuncts, video laryngoscopy, and surgical airway.  Principles of airway management covered include: approach to airway management, airway pharmacology, airway anatomy and crisis resource management.  The course objectives and agenda are attached.

Course Format: The course has a 1:6 instructor to participant ratio, and uses hands-on practice sessions, simulation cases, and “take-home message” summaries to allow participants to gain comfort with the fundamentals of emergency airway management.  A manual is included with the course, and some (minimal) pre-reading is required.  There are also several short videos that participants are required to watch before attending the course.

Course Prerequisites:  There are no prerequisites for this course.

In particular, participants are not required to have any prior simulation experience.  The instructors are committed to creating a comfortable and relaxed learning environment.  We have taught many participants in the past who have come in without any prior simulation experience – and all of them have left asking us when our next simulation-based course is running!

Covid Precautions:  The facility where the course is being held requires all course participants to show proof that they are fully vaccinated prior to entry.  This can be done through showing your Manitoba QR code or your physical Manitoba immunization card.  Please note that only Manitoba vaccination codes and cards will be accepted.  If any participant does not have proof of vaccination, they will be required to obtain a rapid test on site, and show proof of a rapid test before entry to the facility.  All other Covid precautions will be strictly followed, including: masks, physical distancing where possible, enhanced cleaning protocols, sanitizing of equipment in between uses, and ensuring one set of equipment per participant when possible.  Participants and instructors are reminded to self-screen prior to attending the course, and to stay home if they are ill or are a close contact.

Cancellation Policy:  Refunds are not given in the period 6 weeks prior to the course date.  If a participant can find a replacement to take their place, then a refund can be issued, minus a $50 administration fee.
