Course Description: This course is for physicians who want to learn, practice, and improve the skills and knowledge required for safe and effective airway management in an emergency setting. Designed by emergency physicians, for emergency physicians, this course blends simulation and hands-on practice to allow you to integrate skill acquisition with clinical decision making. Skills include: bag-mask ventilation, laryngoscopy and intubation, airway adjuncts, video laryngoscopy, and surgical airway. Principles of airway management covered include: approach to airway management, airway pharmacology, airway anatomy and crisis resource management. The course objectives and agenda are attached.
Course Format: The course has a 1:4 instructor to participant ratio, and uses hands-on practice sessions, simulation cases, and “take-home message” summaries to allow participants to gain comfort with the fundamentals of emergency airway management. A manual is included with the course, and some (minimal) pre-reading is required. There are also several short videos that participants are required to watch before attending the course.
Course Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this course.
In particular, participants are not required to have any prior simulation experience. The instructors are committed to creating a comfortable and relaxed learning environment. We have taught many participants in the past who have come in without any prior simulation experience – and all of them have left asking us when our next simulation-based course is running!
Covid Precautions: Masks must be worn in all indoor spaces on UM campuses, including all common spaces, classrooms, lab doorways, corridors, work spaces, all libraries and all study spaces. UM will supply all necessary masks, both KN95 masks (highly recommended) and the 3-ply medical masks (minimum ASTM Grade 2).
