Description:

From improving retention of restorations to treatment of biological width impingements and promotion of periodontal health, crown lengthening procedures are amongst the most in-demand periodontal pre-restorative surgical approaches.

Selection of the surgical technique and stability of results are highly dependent on proper diagnosis, case planning, and execution of the procedure. Crown lengthening procedures are technically demanding and require assessment not only of the target tooth features, but also the neighboring teeth, the characteristics of the periodontium, relevant anatomical structures and technical feasibility of the procedure.

Conversely, in many situations, the desired goal of exposure of sound tooth structure may fall short, which attests for its technical complexity. This is a comprehensive one-day course devoted to the principles and technical guidelines of crown lengthening procedures for restorative purposes. Its didactic portion includes the biological rationale of crown lengthening procedures with regards to diagnosis, case selection, healing and technique, in scenarios that involve late or immediate restorative approaches. The hands-on portion follows with a mini lecture, a step-by-step demonstration and then hands-on practice of a basic surgical crown lengthening from incision and reestablishment of the biological width to suturing, on pig mandibles.
