Teaching Race: Deepening Understanding and Building Skills to Teach about Racism on Colonized Land – April 25, 2019
Description:
The purpose of this workshop is to provide educators in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences with an introduction to teaching about racism and provide tools for supporting students to think about race, power, and privilege in the context of settler colonialism. It will help facilitate a deeper understanding of racism and strategies for challenging racism, including the development of some basic skills for facilitating conversations around racism and colonization. No previous experience in teaching about race, racism, or colonization is required.
Workshop Objectives:
At the completion of this workshop, the participants will:
- describe racism and colonialism and their impact;
- incorporate discussions about racism and colonization in their teaching;
- and apply basic skills for facilitating conversations around race and colonialism.
Lunch will be provided.
