UM Homecoming: Graduate Program Residents Case Presentations and Intra-Disciplinary Team Approach
The complexity of treatment for patients can vary greatly with inconsistent outcomes. The residents of the Dental Graduate Programs at the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry, University of Manitoba will present and discuss the multidisciplinary approach to complex clinical cases. This lecture will present various clinical situations where a team approach by multiple dental disciplines may serve to enhance the success of outcomes and enrich the clinical and professional growth of the dental practitioner. The session will encourage open discussions and idea exchange and aims to empower the participants with the knowledge necessary to embrace the benefits of collaborative approaches in patient-centered care in their practice. This presentation will be beneficial to general and specialty dentists and their dental teams, to introduce immediate changes in practice and approach to complex cases.

Speaker (s)
Meagan Brown, BSc. (Hons), DDS
Dr. Meagan Brown is the current 3rd year Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery resident. She is originally from Edmonton, Alberta and attended University of Alberta for her undergraduate sciences degree, followed by New York University for dental school. Following dental school, she completed a GPR in the Bronx, NY and worked in general practice for one year before joining University of Manitoba.
Paul Klassen, BDS (Hons), BSc (Hons), MSc (Dist)
Born and raised in Winnipeg, Dr. Paul Klassen attended the University of Winnipeg, studying biology and physical anthropology. Shortly after graduating, he moved to London, England for a Master’s in paleoanthropology, specializing in fossil human dentition. Deciding to swap fossils for patients, Paul attended King’s College, London, where he qualified as a dentist. Dr. Klassen worked for two years as an associate before moving back to Winnipeg to start his residency in periodontology.

Paul Mikhail, DDM
Dr. Paul Mikhail graduated from the University of British Columbia with his Doctor of Dental Medicine in 2008. He is currently in his 3rd year of Prosthodontic training at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Mikhail enjoys all aspects of prosthodontics, including aesthetics and complex treatment planning.
Dr. Derek Oryniak, DMD, BSc, BSc (Dent)
Born in Winnipeg, Dr. Derek Oryniak received a Bachelors in Biochemistry from the University of Winnipeg prior to attending dental school at the University of Manitoba, where he graduated with Honors and the Gold Medal for academic achievement. During his time in undergraduate dentistry, Dr. Oryniak had the opportunity to work with Dr. Prashen Chelikani, studying taste receptors and their role in early childhood caries, and was Senior Stick for the Manitoba Dental Student’s Association. Dr. Oryniak then went on to complete a 1-year Graduate Program Residency at the Health Sciences Centre before being accepted into the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program at the University of Manitoba, where he is currently a PGY-3.
Outside of dentistry, Derek enjoys playing sports and spending time with family. Prior to residency, he was an avid golfer and runner, having completed numerous half marathons and one full marathon.
Ana Schettini, DDS
Dr. Ana Schettini received her Doctoral of Dental Surgery from the Federal University of Uberlandia (Brazil) and is currently a 3rd year Graduate Prosthodontics Resident at the University of Manitoba. She enjoys the challenge of treatment planning and executing interdisciplinary cases as well as contributing to the dental community.
When not in clinic or with her co-residents at the Graduate Prosthodontics Dental Laboratory (where they certainly spend a lot of their time), Dr. Schettini enjoys spending time at a good local coffee shop or working on a DYI project at home.
Registration
Registration is required for attendance to the event. Please open/sign into a CPD account to register. Registrant must provide an email address to receive a Verification of Attendance for submission to their respective regulatory authority to attain CDE credit hours. Registration fee is complimentary.
This event is available in-person only. The event will take place at the Bannatyne Campus of the University of Manitoba in the Apotex Centre, Room 071.

This course provides up to 2.5 hours of Continuing Dental Education (CDE) Credits.
