This interactive event will explore the basic components of the well baby physical examination and history in the neonatal period prior to hospital discharge. Common neonatal abnormalities and their management will be outlined including components of well baby care and their rationale in the hospital setting.
Elements of parental anticipatory guidance as well as red flags for paediatric referral will be discussed with the audience. A question and answer session will follow the didactic portion.
This event will be of interest to family practice physicians, nurse practitioners, and nurses.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this session participants will be able to:
- Describe the general approach to the neonatal examination
- Outline the components of an adequate antenatal and neonatal history
- Explore common abnormal neonatal findings on physical examination
- Briefly outline the approach to hyperbilirubinaemia, hypoglycaemia, and neonatal sepsis
- Describe the elements of parental anticipatory guidance as a component of the well baby check
- Recognise red flags on neonatal history and physical examination requiring paediatric referral
